Bendway Correction (Vorticity)

Published May 14, 2020

Flow around bends in river systems or river training structures exhibit behavior that is strongly influenced by three-dimensional flow effects. Sediment transport is also influenced by certain three-dimensional effects. In order to obtain approximate representations of these types of flow behaviors, the 2D shallow water module in AdH includes corrections to the basic two-dimensional equations in order to approximate the three-dimensional effects on the flowfield. The corrections that are included in AdH are not intended to account for all of the three-dimensional processes that occur during bendway flow. Rather, the corrections are intended to allow engineers to use a two-dimensional model to make decisions about initial training structure design schemes and river maintenance plans without the cost of performing three-dimensional numerical and/or physical models on a wide range of design alternatives.
