  • Katlyn Castillo is the chief of the Information Generation and Management Branch of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Geospatial Research Laboratory. In 2015, she received the ERDC award for Outstanding Achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Outreach, and the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service for the Man Power Survey effort.  In 2014, she received the ERDC award for Outstanding Team Effort. Castillo earned a bachelor’s and master’s in mathematics with a concentration in applied mathematics from George Mason University.

  • Dr. Julie Rosati is the Technical Director, Flood and Coastal in the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory. She earned a doctorate in coastal engineering from Louisiana State University and brings more than 30 years of coastal research and development experience to the position. She recently supported the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study, and has been a leader in the Regional Sediment Management and Coastal Inlets programs. Rosati is a Professional Engineer licensed in Mississippi. She is also an active member and technical leader in the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association.

  • Recently, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory hosted 150 students from the local Richmond Middle School to kick-off the annual Adopt-A-Buoy program in which researchers interact with students to learn more about the Arctic and their own environment. In the photo, Dr. Don Perovich explains to the students how extensive the Arctic Ocean’s sea ice extent has changed – from September 1980 having 7.8 million square kilometers of coverage to September 2012 and 3.4 million square kilometers, which indicates a huge decrease in ice extent. Data shows that the Arctic Ocean’s ice sheet is losing both area and thickness.

According to the MES website, the society’s members include professional (licensed) engineers, engineer interns, engineering students and experienced graduate engineers from all disciplines of the profession. MES members work in industry, government, private practice, construction and education. The MES was founded in 1939 and chartered by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1956.

Horne earned a bachelor’s in mathematics from Louisiana State University, a master’s in physical oceanography and meteorology from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a master’s in physics from the University of Southern Mississippi. Horne is a member of the Oceanography Society, American Meteorological Society and Military Officer’s Association of America.
