About EL

The Environmental Laboratory (EL) is ERDC’s primary center for ecosystem science, ecosystem technology, and environmental resiliency research. For almost 45 years, we’ve supported the environmental mission of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense, and the nation.

Headquartered in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and with facilities across the country, we’re a multidisciplinary team of more than 220 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel working together to take groundbreaking research projects from start to finish. From creating sensors to detect naturally occurring threats to restoring bird habitats with dredge material, we’re passionate about environmental science’s potential to make the world safer and better.

We are problem-solvers who use every tool in our arsenal – research, development, experimentation, special studies, and technical support – to deliver the mission. But we can’t do it alone. We partner with federal and state agencies, academia, and the private sector to solve complex problems impacting environmental sustainability in our nation and around the world.
