    Eric Lam, an environmental engineer from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Fort Worth District, has been selected to participate in the 2021 session of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center University. This year’s participants were introduced to the organizations’ senior leaders during virtual presentations March 11, 2021.

    ERDC University 2021 selectees announced

    Engineers from four U.S. Army Corps of Engineer (USACE) districts have been selected for the 2021 session of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center University (ERDC-U). Now in its sixth year, ERDC-U pairs USACE division and district participants with relevant laboratory mentors for six-month research projects.

    ERDC Soldiers compete, complete Norwegian Foot March

    On March 6, a group of Soldiers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) made their way to Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center just south of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to compete for the chance to earn the esteemed Norwegian Foot March Badge.

    Dr. Igor Linkov, senior science and technology manager at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, has been selected by the Department of Defense (DoD) as Laboratory Scientist of the Year for the second quarter of fiscal year 2020.     ERDC scientist earns top DoD award for achievements in risk, resilience science

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – Dr. Igor Linkov, senior science and technology manager at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), was recently selected by the Department of Defense (DoD) as the Laboratory Scientist of the Year for the second quarter of fiscal year 2020.
  • Brandy Diggs-McGee, a research mechanical engineer at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, was honored with the Most Promising Engineer in Government Award at the 2021 Black Engineer of the Year Awards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Conference.

    ERDC researchers earn six Black Engineer of the Year Awards

    Six researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) were chosen to receive top honors at the 2021 Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA), an event held virtually Feb. 13.
  • Dr. David W. Pittman became the Director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), headquartered in Vicksburg, Mississippi, in March 2017. As Director, he manages one of the most diverse research organizations in the world – seven laboratories located in four states, with more than 2,100 employees, $1.2 billion in facilities, and a $1 billion annual program.

    Dr. David Pittman, director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), has been chosen for the 2021 Director of the Year award by the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC).
  • Tim Pangburn adds his portrait to the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) Gallery of Distinguished Employees in Hanover, N.H., Dec. 3, 2002. Panburn started working for CRREL in 1978 as a civil engineering technician, until his retirement in 2017 as a director for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Remote Sensing/Geographic Information Systems Center of Expertise. The CRREL Gallery of Distinguished Employees was established in 1986 as part of the laboratory’s Silver Jubilee Year. The first distinguished employee recognized in the gallery is W. Keith Boyd, the first CRREL technical director. Boyd facilitated the 1961 establishment of CRREL in Hanover, and his leadership enhanced CRREL’s stature and reputation as a leader in cold regions research throughout the world.     CRREL inducts Pangburn into Gallery of Distinguished Employees

    The Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) honored its researchers, scientists and engineers during an awards ceremony in Hanover, New Hampshire, in December 2020. The final award, the Distinguished Employee Award, recognized the lifelong contributions made by Tim Pangburn, who started working for CRREL in 1978 as a civil engineering technician. He retired in 2017 as a director for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Remote Sensing (RS)/Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Center of Expertise.

    ERDC researcher awarded top honor from USACE

    Dr. Rebekah Wilson, a chemist with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL), says she found direction during her high school years when physical science and chemistry became her passions. The subjects made sense to her, and she easily found logical answers to seemingly difficult problems using math to predict reactions and create products.
  • Dr. Burton Suedel, a research biologist with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Environmental Laboratory, is recognized by ASTM International for leading a diverse group of individuals from public companies, trade groups, government agencies and environmental consultancies to develop a guide for risk-based corrective action for contaminated sediment sites. The ASTM International’s Distinguished Service Award was bestowed upon Suedel Oct. 28, 2020.

    ERDC researcher impacts international contaminated sediment standards

    When Dr. Burton Suedel, a research biologist with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Environmental Laboratory (ERDC-EL), heard about the ASTM International project to develop a guide for risk-based corrective action for contaminated sediment sites, he saw it as an opportunity for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to inform international contaminated sediment standards and policy.

    Dr. Rebekah Wilson of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) was honored with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Researcher of the Year Award at a virtual ceremony held Nov. 12, 2020. Other ERDC award winners at the ceremony included Joseph Bush, also of CERL; the ERDC contracting office; the COVID-19 Model and Analysis Team; the Harmful Algal Bloom Interception, Treatment, and Transformation System Team; Lyle Seethaler; Dr. Guillermo Riveros; and the Horseshoe Bend Delivery Team.

    ERDC wins big at USACE National Awards Ceremony

    The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) brought home eight awards from the annual U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) National Awards Ceremony, held virtually Nov. 12, 2020. Employees of the ERDC Construction Research and Engineering Laboratory (CERL) claimed two of the top honors at the ceremony. Dr. Rebekah Wilson was named USACE Researcher of the Year and Joseph Bush won USACE Mechanical Engineer of the Year.

Becker, a physical scientist at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Geospatial Research Laboratory (ERDC-GRL), posed in Colombia where she and other ERDC-GRL personnel collected ground-based hyperspectral data on native plants to determine if spectrally separable signatures between the different plants could be determined.

    MacAllister builds relationships while battling pathogens in the Czech Republic

    When Irene MacAllister learned the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (DASA) for Defense Exports and Cooperation (DE&C) was searching for potential candidates with expertise in immunology, microbiology, proteomics, gene editing and bioinformatics who were interested in a 12-month assignment to the Czech Republic, she jumped at the chance.
  • Dr. Edmond Russo, a 27-year U.S. Army Corps of Engineers veteran, has been selected as the director of the Environmental Laboratory at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The ERDC helps solve the nation’s most challenging problems in civil and military engineering, geospatial sciences, water resources and environmental sciences, and conducts research and development in support of the Soldier, military installations and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers civil works mission, as well as for other federal, state and municipal authorities.

  • The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Streamflow Prediction Tool (SPT) now has the capability of using authoritative U.S. Air Force weather forecasts that leverage several models developed in the United Kingdom and by NASA. To create this SPT enhancement, ERDC researchers collaborated with the U.K. Meteorological Office in a project funded by the U.S. Army Foreign Technology (and Science) Assessment Support program.

    Until engaging in conversation with colleagues while on temporary duty in the United Kingdom, Dr. Ahmad Tavakoly was not aware of the U.S. Army Foreign Technology (and Science) Assessment Support (FTAS) program. This summer, Tavakoly, a research civil engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research a Development Center’s (ERDC) Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), and co-principal investigator Dr. Mark Wahl, also from CHL, completed the first ERDC project funded by the program.
