    The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) continues to recognize the wide-range of individuals who come from different backgrounds and provide additional insights into the human experience of its workforce. In observance of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, ERDC held its second annual ERDC-wide AAPI panel discussion.

    RD22 workshop addresses R&D challenges, emphasizes strategic collaboration

    Scientists and engineers from across the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) participated in the organization’s Research and Development 2022 (RD22) workshop and symposium, April 26-28. The event was held at the Vicksburg, Mississippi, main campus and was broadcast virtually over eight time zones with more than 600 attendees.

    ERDC researchers complete collaborative effort to deliver results to district, stakeholders

    VICKSBURG, Miss. — Since 2019, U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Research Biologists Dr. Burton Suedel and Justin Wilkens have been working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Honolulu District to answer questions about whether dredging-induced sediment plumes could affect corals.

    ERDC researchers help prioritize support for Rhode Island hospitals during omicron surge

    When both the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) needed to prioritize hospital support in New England during the COVID-19 omicron variant surge in the beginning of January, they turned to the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Risk and Decision Science Team (RADST) led by Jeff Cegan.

  • Bats can be vectors for diseases, such as rabies, and can therefore be classified as a naturally occurring threat to the Soldier entering a subterranean environment in an overseas military operation. Team members from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center are currently investigating how to develop sensors that would eventually be fitted to unmanned vehicles to detect these naturally occurring threats, which can be subdivided into the macroscopic type, such as bats, arachnids and reptiles, and the microscopic threat agents — or the diseases that the macroscopic species may carry that could spread to people.

    A multidisciplinary team at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center-Environmental Laboratory (ERDC-EL) is currently cataloguing the naturally occurring threats that Soldiers encounter in such situations, with the goal of eventually developing an unmanned solution.
