    Three inducted into Waterways Experiment Station Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees

    A new group of U.S. Army Engineer and Research Development Center (ERDC) retirees were celebrated for their contributions and enshrined into the agency’s most esteemed collective in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Dr. Alfred Cofrancesco, Patti Duett, and Dr. William Grogan were inducted into the Waterways Experiment Station (WES) Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees during the agency's Induction Ceremony Thursday, July 27, at the ERDC Headquarters Auditorium. The achievement is the highest honor a former ERDC-WES site employee could accomplish, and the newest inductees bring the total number of gallery members to 116.

    Zahraa Al Khafaji, project engineer with the Chicago District, was selected as a participant for the ERDC University Class of 2023. Her six-month project at ERDC’s Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory in Vicksburg, Miss., focuses on processes to become a concrete specialist for this USACE critical area, which provides the primary construction material for civil works and military structures.

As the Deputy Director of ERDC, Sullivan assists in leading one of the most diverse research organizations in the world, with seven laboratories located in four states, more than 2,500 employees, $1.2 billion in facilities and an annual research program exceeding $1.8 billion.

    Dr. Emily Asenath-Smith displays an ice laminate grown on a surface using her patented invention, “Vertical draw system and method for surface adhesion of crystalline materials,” which is a foundational component of her ice adhesion research program at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Center (CRREL). Asenath-Smith is the lead investigator for CRREL’s Ice Adhesion Facility where much of her innovative research is conducted.

    Improved ice removal methods lead to patent for ERDC CRREL inventor

    With winter weather approaching in colder climates, travelers face daily frustrations of scraping away the ice clinging to steps and vehicle glass surfaces. There are also impending risks of power outages caused by ice storms. For the military, icy conditions threaten the safety and success of global operations by severing communication and utility networks, halting transportation and interfering with visibility.
  • Computer scientist Tung “Alex” Ly with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) invented the “Digital Buoy Systems and Method” in his laboratory at ERDC’s Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL), Alexandria, Virginia. He received a patent in May 2022 for his digital system which will help reduce operational costs to the U.S. Government and provide real-time, reliable and enhanced marine navigation safety for U.S. private, public and commercial industries.

    To improve marine navigation safety, enhance system efficiency and reduce buoys-tendering operational cost for the government, computer scientist Tung “Alex” Ly with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) invented the “Digital Buoy Systems and Method” at ERDC’s Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL).

    David Hibner is the new director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Geospatial Research Laboratory. He also serves as the director of the Army Geospatial Center and the Geospatial Information Officer of the Army.

    David Hibner was selected to the Senior Executive Service and began serving as the new director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL) September 26, 2022. Along with his duties as GRL director, Hibner also serves as the director of the Army Geospatial Center (AGC) and the Geospatial Information Officer of the Army.
