Wittmann and fellow scientist Dr. Zoe Courville recently returned from Antarctica, where they performed critical crevasse detection and mitigation on the most problematic portion of the roughly 1,000-mile long South Pole Traverse (SPoT) route, a three-mile wide shear zone where the McMurdo and Ross ice shelves meet.

    ERDC researcher experiences ‘awesome’ maiden trip to Antarctica

    Hannah Wittmann, a research physical scientist at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, New Hampshire, recently returned from her first trip to Antarctica, where she helped perform critical crevasse detection and mitigation work along the roughly 1,000-mile long South Pole Traverse (SPoT) route.

    ERDC’s Josefik honored for advancing emergency response

    Nicholas Josefik, an industrial engineer at the U.S. Army Engineer Research Development Center (ERDC), was recently recognized at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) Under Secretary’s Awards Ceremony for leading a team in the development of a one-of-a-kind emergency response vehicle.

    ERDC unveils newest supercomputer in recognition of Medal of Honor recipient

    The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) unveiled and dedicated its newest supercomputer, an HPE EX 4000, in honor of Medal of Honor recipient and Mississippi native, Cpl. William “Kyle” Carpenter, in a ceremony held at the organization’s Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

    Twinkling lights, holiday cheer return with ERDC Under the Lights

    Employees at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) have been hard at work stringing lights and hanging bows for ERDC’s annual holiday lights celebration. The public event is set for Dec. 7-8, from 6-8 p.m., with a separate employee-only night scheduled for Dec. 6. Visitors should enter through Gate 3, just south of the Main Gate at 3909 Halls Ferry Road.

    Twelve participants from across the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were chosen for ERDC University, a six-month detail at the Engineer Research and Development Center. ERDC University orientation was held February 28-March 1 in Vicksburg, Mississippi.     Corps of Engineers District selectees graduate from ERDC University

    Participants from nine U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Districts and the Institute for Water Resources graduated from ERDC University in September, following project presentations to the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) senior leaders.

    Nakita Smith, lead realty specialist with the Pittsburgh District, was selected as a participant for the ERDC University Class of 2023. Her six-month project with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Reachback Operations Center at ERDC will focus on developing technical skills in GIS mapping and compliance inspections.

    Researchers from 10 U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Districts have been selected for the 2023 session of the Engineer Research and Development Center University (ERDC-U). Nakita Smith, lead realty specialist with the Pittsburgh District, was chosen to participate in the detail program, now in its eighth year.

His six-month project with ERDC's Coastal and Hydraulic Laboratory will focus on improving the knowledge base in the field of post-fire hydrology for scientists and researchers.

    Ian Markovich, a biologist with the Jacksonville District, has been selected for ERDC University. The goal of his six-month project is to focus on aquatic plant management, particularly Hydrilla management techniques and mechanisms to improve operational treatment efficacy.

  • During his tour of Vicksburg’s campus, Sacramento District’s Joe Hernandez visited the Environmental Laboratory’s Cognitive Ecology Ecohydraulics Research Facility for a briefing on Computational Modeling for Fish Tracking and the Information Technology Laboratory where he will be working on his six-month project for ERDC University.

  • Michael Mansfield, a river engineer in training (EIT) with the Kansas City District, has been selected for ERDC University. The goal of his six-month program is to research the operational constraints and anticipated effectiveness of water injection dredging on Tuttle Creek Lake.

    Sliding on ice at speeds exceeding 90 mph is terrifying for most people, but the USA Luge team is seeking assistance from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) along with academic and industry leaders to go even faster.

    ERDC Security trains with Clinton Police Department

    In May, ERDC security forces met with two representatives from CPD to receive training on innovative and safe restraining procedures. The program, called Police Subject Control, is a series of techniques that allow security forces to take control of a scenario and facilitate de-escalation with as little force as possible.

    Three inducted into Waterways Experiment Station Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees

    A new group of U.S. Army Engineer and Research Development Center (ERDC) retirees were celebrated for their contributions and enshrined into the agency’s most esteemed collective in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Dr. Alfred Cofrancesco, Patti Duett, and Dr. William Grogan were inducted into the Waterways Experiment Station (WES) Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees during the agency's Induction Ceremony Thursday, July 27, at the ERDC Headquarters Auditorium. The achievement is the highest honor a former ERDC-WES site employee could accomplish, and the newest inductees bring the total number of gallery members to 116.
