    A SMART scholar

    In 2016, Warren Kadoya was finishing up his master’s at the University of Arizona in Tucson — looking for a job and aspiring to continue his education by pursing a doctorate in environmental engineering ― when his advisors encouraged him to apply to the Department of Defense’s (DoD) SMART Scholarship program. Kadoya was selected for the program by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, New Hampshire, and the experience enabled him to continue his education while simultaneously working in his field of study.

    CERL Team develops new decision support tool

    A U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center Construction Engineer Research Laboratory (CERL) team has been working to develop a tool called Facility Investment Analytics, or FIA. FIA is a decision support tool for the Installation Program Evaluation Group Program Objective Memorandum planning that generates prioritized Facility Investment Plan data based on critical infrastructure requirements from Army senior leaders and risk prioritization analysis.

    ERDC researcher earns patent for high performance photocatalytic material

    Dr. Emily Asenath-Smith's determination to develop low energy solutions to remediate water led her to develop U.S. Patent No. 11,298,689, awarded April 12, 2022, for “Multi-spectral photocatalytic compounds.”
  • More than 120 attendees from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard and a multitude of federal agencies, as well as partners from allied nations with interests in the Arctic such as Canada and the United Kingdom, came to CRREL to discuss new technologies being developed, new means of international communication and how to overcome the challenges of maintaining Arctic dominance as a united group.

    Brian Green, senior research geologist with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL), was recently selected by the American Concrete Institute (ACI) to lead its newly established Concrete Innovation Council as part of its ACI Foundation.

    Whether you’re a hobbyist at home or a researcher at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), not having one special piece to finish a project and that isn’t readily available is universal. The engineers, researchers, and scientists at CRREL need only ask Chris Donnelly, a CRREL engineering technician and machine shop manager, to make them the part they require.
  • A recently opened thermokarst pit caused by the melting of ground ice in a region underlain by permafrost shows where upwelling shallow ground water is flowing through another thermokarst feature. Note a moose carcass in the base of the thaw feature. It is not clear how this moose died but it was a healthy young moose that not predated. The working hypothesis is it got stuck in deep snow or it broke a leg on the uneven fallen trees below.

    ERDC researchers investigate how climate change impacts permafrost

    Permafrost is found beneath nearly 85 percent of Alaska. While it is typically very strong, as the ice in the permafrost begins to warm, it weakens, and foundations built upon it may begin to fail. CRREL researchers at the Permafrost Tunnel Research Facility are working to address challenges with building on permafrost.

    Passion is a key component to success, whether that be for work, a hobby or a sport. In the workplace, passion has motivated Marin Blaisdell to be a successful materials engineer for the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL). But a separate passion has driven her to compete in figure skating at the national level. Blaisdell knows the importance of dedication and precision, whether she is in Anchorage, Alaska, performing CRREL strength tests on snow patches used for rapid airfield crater damage repair, or perfecting a double salchow-single loop-double loop; she knows it takes perseverance to achieve her best.

    ERDC researchers complete collaborative effort to deliver results to district, stakeholders

    VICKSBURG, Miss. — Since 2019, U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Research Biologists Dr. Burton Suedel and Justin Wilkens have been working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Honolulu District to answer questions about whether dredging-induced sediment plumes could affect corals.
