    International Bat Week: ERDC goes to bat to protect winged allies

    According to the Department of Defense (DOD) Natural Resources Program, more than 300 military installations will be potentially affected by at least one bat species listing under the Endangered Species Act in the next five years. Researchers from ERDC's Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) and Environmental Laboratory (EL) are at the forefront of innovative projects aimed at understanding and preserving bat populations on DoD installations.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Buffalo District recently hosted personnel from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Environmental Laboratory and Information Technology Laboratory to field test two dredging evaluation decision and data documentation tools designed to speed decision making for environmental compliance determinations with state and federal agencies. The work was funded by the Dredging Operations Environmental Research (DOER) Program.     Researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), along with scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and other partners, are currently working on a project to test the effectiveness of underwater sound technology on invasive carps — Bighead Carp, Silver Carp, Black Carp and Grass Carp — and the response of various native species of interest throughout the Mississippi River and Great Lakes basins, as well as additional native watersheds.

    Engineering With Nature initiative contributes to White House roadmap for accelerating nature-based solutions

    VICKSBURG, Miss. — U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Engineering With Nature (EWN) leaders contributed to a White House interagency report released Nov. 8 about opportunities for the federal government to accelerate the implementation of nature-based solutions (NBS). “The report provides a roadmap with five strategic recommendations for federal agencies to implement, and it provides an agency resource guide of thirty NBS examples in action,” said Dr. Todd Bridges, national lead of EWN.
