    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers uses the Hydro survey vessel "Blackwater" on the water near Fort Myers, Fla. Oct. 5, 2022 to survey vessel paths of debris and sunken ships. The vessel cleared the path for all vehicles before they could enter the Fort Myers Harbor.

    Crowdsourcing bathymetry could provide near-time picture of nation’s inland waterways

    Taking advantage of vessels already on the water, an effort in the works at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) will use those vessels’ depth finders and GPS to create a snapshot of a channel and any obstructions that may exist.
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New Orleans District started augmenting an underwater sill in the Mississippi River to slow progression of salt water upstream, October 1, 2023. USACE continues to closely monitor, survey and model conditions on the river with regards to potential impacts on both navigation and saltwater intrusion from the Gulf of Mexico.     ERDC researchers assist with saltwater intrusion efforts in southern Louisiana

    As residents of Louisiana prepare for possible disruptions in their drinking water caused by saltwater intrusion, researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) are assisting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New Orleans District with assessment and mitigation efforts.

    ERDC-Vicksburg laboratories celebrate 25th anniversary with Open House

    Laboratories from across the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) showcased their expertise, experiments and research as part of a celebration honoring the agency's 25th anniversary.
  • Jose Paredez, a civil engineer with the Los Angeles District, was selected as a participant for the ERDC University Class of 2023. His six-month project with ERDC's Coastal and Hydraulic Laboratory will focus on improving the knowledge base in the field of post-fire hydrology for scientists and researchers.

    Michael Mansfield, a river engineer in training (EIT) with the Kansas City District, has been selected for ERDC University. The goal of his six-month program is to research the operational constraints and anticipated effectiveness of water injection dredging on Tuttle Creek Lake.

    Researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District and the City of Tybee Island to measure vessel wakes near the island’s north shore in hopes of understanding which ships and operating conditions are associated with large wakes. Commercial vessels transiting the Savannah entrance channel intermittently generate large wake events on the North Beach, creating a potential hazard for beachgoers.

    ERDC researchers test designs for lock improvements along the Upper Ohio River

    Researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) have partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Pittsburgh District for a study focused on replacing auxiliary locks at three sites along the Upper Ohio River — Montgomery Lock, Emsworth Lock and Dashields Lock.

    What did it take for the four-member research team who developed the “ISSDOTv2 bedload transport methodology” to create a U.S. patent-worthy invention? For this team, it was made possible by varied expertise, a combined 86 years of experience, a desire to solve river sediment challenges and helpful friendships.

    Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory invention team receives patent for bed-load transport measurement technique

    Utilizing their combined decades of experience in river mechanics, a four-member team of research physicists and hydraulic engineers with the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) combined their expertise to invent the Integrated Section, Surface Difference Over Time, version 2 (ISSDOTv2) method, which accurately measures the sediment moving on the bed of large sand-bed rivers. The team from ERDC’s Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) received their patent, “Bedload transport methodology and method of use,” in July of 2021.
