    Though Howard W. McGee Jr. and Dr. Fred T. Tracy had very different careers during their time at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), the two now have something major in common—they’re both 2021 inductees to the prestigious Waterways Experiment Station Gallery of Distinguished Employees. Surrounded by family, friends and coworkers gathered virtually and in-person, McGee and Tracy, both of Vicksburg, were inducted to the gallery at a ceremony on July 15, 2021, at the ERDC Information Technology Laboratory.

    ERDC brings history, experience to the crucial fight against climate change

    In early June, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released a report showing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere had reached levels not seen in more than 4 million years. The report has brought more weight to the emphasis President Biden’s administration has placed on a “climate crisis that threatens our people and communities, public health and economy, and, starkly, our ability to live on the planet Earth.”
  • While on a trip to the Republic of Korea to conduct cybersecurity vulnerability assemsments, a team from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Information Technology Laboratory was forced to quarantine upon arrival for 14 days. To pay forward the kindness of volunteers who helped them through their quarantine, the group decided to spend time packing care packages for others who would be faced with the same situation.

    Trip to Republic of Korea provides opportunity to give back

    A team from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) recently deployed to the Republic of Korea to conduct cybersecurity vulnerability assessments of operational technology (OT), control systems and supervisory control and data acquisition systems on behalf of the Department of the Army. Due to local COVID-19 restrictions, the Advanced Threat Landscape and Simulations (ATLS) team was required to quarantine in barracks at Camp Humphreys for 14 days upon their arrival, a time they got through with the help of local volunteers. Grateful for their support, the team seized the opportunity to pay the kindness forward later in the trip.
  • Timothy L. Welp, a research hydraulic engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, was a leader in the dredging industry and provided technical support to field projects conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

    The dredging industry has suffered a great loss with the recent death of Timothy L. Welp, a research hydraulic engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC).

    ERDC has begun to ship simulator technology for military uses giving leaders a tool to simulate vessel landings in severe environments.

    Using simulation tools for operational readiness in maritime and littoral operations

    Operational readiness is a term used throughout the six branches of the U.S. military. The ability of armed forces to conduct the full range of military operations, regardless of a posed threat, is contingent upon how well units are manned, equipped, trained and led. To increase readiness, researchers at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) have partnered with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps on a joint venture to use ship simulation and numerical models in the planning of amphibious assaults and littoral operations.

    A U.S. Army Landing Craft Utility 2000 offloads equipment to a Trident Pier at Anmyeon Beach on the west coast of the Republic of Korea during exercise Combined Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (LOTS) 2015. CJLOTS 2015 is an exercise designed to train U.S. and ROK service members to accomplish vital logistical measures in a strategic area while strengthening communication and cooperation in the U.S.-ROK alliance.

    Modeling the dynamics of the Modular Causeway System

    In contingency operations, the Modular Causeway System (MCS), an assembly of floating modules, is often used for loading and unloading supplies and equipment from ship to shore. The U.S. Transportation Command has enlisted the help of researchers at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) to numerically model the MCS and provide data that will aid in expanding the guidance to increase safety and efficiency for the warfighter.
