    Computer scientist Tung “Alex” Ly with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) invented the “Digital Buoy Systems and Method” in his laboratory at ERDC’s Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL), Alexandria, Virginia. He received a patent in May 2022 for his digital system which will help reduce operational costs to the U.S. Government and provide real-time, reliable and enhanced marine navigation safety for U.S. private, public and commercial industries.

    Army’s Digital Buoy System selected as R&D 100 finalist

    Dwindling capacity at Tuttle Creek Reservoir calls for an urgent and innovative solution

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is no stranger to sediment build-up issues. The organization is responsible for maintaining and managing thousands of miles of inland and intracoastal waterways, channels, ports and harbors with a dredging budget of more than $1.7 billion in fiscal year 2023 alone. Presently, USACE researchers are taking on a slightly different challenge and investigating new methods to diminish the accumulation of sediment in lakes and reservoirs caused by dams.
  • Using natural and nature-based features (NNBF), which are measures and techniques that can be incorporated into shore protection, improved coastal resilience can be achieved while producing additional economic, environmental and social benefits.

    Natural features to play crucial role in building a more resilient Great Lakes coastline

    Communities along the Great Lakes coastline are experiencing increased frequency in coastal flooding and erosion, causing property damage, putting lives at risk, and disrupting local economies. With the support of the Engineering With Nature® (EWN) program, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) can provide technical direction and guidance to USACE Districts around the nation to look at innovative ways of improving coastal resilience.

    Crowdsourcing bathymetry could provide near-time picture of nation’s inland waterways

    Taking advantage of vessels already on the water, an effort in the works at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) will use those vessels’ depth finders and GPS to create a snapshot of a channel and any obstructions that may exist.
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New Orleans District started augmenting an underwater sill in the Mississippi River to slow progression of salt water upstream, October 1, 2023.     ERDC labs lead modernization of dredging evaluation guidance, tools for environmental compliance decisions

    The project delivery team for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Dredging Operations and Environmental Research, or DOER, Project 19-11 recently published technical guidance and tools for modernizing the conduct of dredging evaluations for open water disposal compliance.

  • Ms. Patricia M. Sullivan became the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Associate Director in May 2014. As Associate Director, Ms. Sullivan assists the ERDC in managing one of the most diverse research organizations in the world, with seven laboratories located in four states and more than 2,100 employees, $1.2B in facilities and an annual research program exceeding $1.3B.

    ERDC Researchers Co-lead Multiagency Team to Service Prototype Underwater Acoustic Deterrent System

    Researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), along with scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and other partners, are currently working on a project to test the effectiveness of underwater sound technology on invasive carps — Bighead Carp, Silver Carp, Black Carp and Grass Carp — and the response of various native species of interest throughout the Mississippi River and Great Lakes basins, as well as additional native watersheds.
