    ERDC multi-disciplinary, multi-laboratory team earns cost-saving coated dowel bar patent

    Combining multi-disciplinary talents from two laboratories at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), a three-person team earned a U.S. patent in July 2020 for the inventive Electro-active Vitreous Enamel Coated Dowel Bar, which stabilizes concrete segments and reduces repair costs.

    The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) brought home eight awards from the annual U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) National Awards Ceremony, held virtually Nov. 12, 2020. Employees of the ERDC Construction Research and Engineering Laboratory (CERL) claimed two of the top honors at the ceremony. Dr. Rebekah Wilson was named USACE Researcher of the Year and Joseph Bush won USACE Mechanical Engineer of the Year.

The current COVID-19 environment presented new obstacles for the Sensor Integration Branch (SIB) in the ERDC’s Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) and Environmental Processes Branch (CNE) in the ERDC’s Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, prompting the robotics group to capitalize on simulation software capabilities to meet mission requirements.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineer (USACE) recently named Joseph Bush, a mechanical engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) headquarted in Champaign, Illinois, the 2020 “Mechanical Engineer of the Year.”

    Although the vast majority of employees with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) are Department of Defense civilians, the select few U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the ERDC are making a significant impact during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March 2020, Soldiers from across the ERDC have deployed around the country to aid in the fight against the disease, many mobilizing to “hotspots” to confront the unique challenges of fighting an unseen enemy.

    Corps researchers win Department of Defense award for environmental restoration

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Dr. Kathryn Guy and Dr. Martin Page, both materials engineers at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, were part of a team of researchers who recently received the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program Project of the Year award in Environmental Restoration.
