    A recently opened thermokarst pit caused by the melting of ground ice in a region underlain by permafrost shows where upwelling shallow ground water is flowing through another thermokarst feature. Note a moose carcass in the base of the thaw feature. It is not clear how this moose died but it was a healthy young moose that not predated. The working hypothesis is it got stuck in deep snow or it broke a leg on the uneven fallen trees below.

    ERDC researchers investigate how climate change impacts permafrost

    Permafrost is found beneath nearly 85 percent of Alaska. While it is typically very strong, as the ice in the permafrost begins to warm, it weakens, and foundations built upon it may begin to fail. CRREL researchers at the Permafrost Tunnel Research Facility are working to address challenges with building on permafrost.

    RD22 workshop addresses R&D challenges, emphasizes strategic collaboration

    Scientists and engineers from across the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) participated in the organization’s Research and Development 2022 (RD22) workshop and symposium, April 26-28. The event was held at the Vicksburg, Mississippi, main campus and was broadcast virtually over eight time zones with more than 600 attendees.

    On April 14, a team of U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) leaders visited Mississippi State University (MSU). The event — designated as ERDC Day — consisted of classroom presentations, an exhibit/student intern showcase and a public affairs panel to link MSU students to ERDC.

    ERDC’s Flowers passionate about community involvement

    Keith Flowers, the deputy director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), is passionate about getting involved in the community he calls home.

    ERDC Engineer Studies, Dances on Ice

    Passion is a key component to success, whether that be for work, a hobby or a sport. In the workplace, passion has motivated Marin Blaisdell to be a successful materials engineer for the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL). But a separate passion has driven her to compete in figure skating at the national level. Blaisdell knows the importance of dedication and precision, whether she is in Anchorage, Alaska, performing CRREL strength tests on snow patches used for rapid airfield crater damage repair, or perfecting a double salchow-single loop-double loop; she knows it takes perseverance to achieve her best.

    David Rogillio, Michael Channell and Mickey Blackmon of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) review plans for containerized medical solutions, a quickly assembled, low-cost method of building airborne infectious isolation rooms using commercially available intermodal container units. In addition to the ERDC personnel, the invention team also included U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center's David Braidich of Manassas, Virginia; Brian Roden of Madison, Alabama; and Bryan Merry of Huntsville, Alabama.

    ERDC receives patent for portable medical units

    The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers met the challenge to provide additional hospital rooms for COVID-19 patients by inventing portable medical units created at the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). Relieving overcrowded hospital facilities, these prefabricated containers were modified as medical isolation rooms and received U. S. Patent 11103406, titled “Airborne infectious disease isolation units and method of making using prefabricated containers.” The patent was issued in August 2021 for the six-member invention team at ERDC’s Installation Operations Command (IOC) Installation Support Division.
  • Three employees of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center were chosen to receive 2022 Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA). Chris Lunderman, research physicist in the Information Technology Lab (ITL), received the Outstanding Achievement and Science Spectrum Trailblazer Award; Herman Moore, computer scientist in ITL, received the Professional Achievement Award; and Dr. Brianna Thompson, a mathematician in ITL, received the Modern-Day Technology Leader Award. The awards will be presented at the BEYA STEM Global Competitiveness Conference in Washington, D.C., February 17-19, 2022.

    ERDC biologists’ research noted in professional journal

    Studies conducted by research biologists at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Environmental Laboratory (EL) on the management of the invasive aquatic plant flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus L.) were published in the 2021 Issue 59 of the peer-reviewed Journal of Aquatic Plant Management.

  • Brewer lauded with USACE Chief Counsel's Honorary Award

    An attorney at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) was recently recognized during the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Chief Counsel’s Honorary Awards ceremony. Allison Brewer, who has been with the ERDC Office of Counsel for more than five years, was awarded the E. Manning Seltzer Award for Special Contributions, which is named for the Chief Legal Advisor to the Chief of Engineers and General Counsel of the USACE from 1956 until 1977. The award recognizes an attorney who has made one or more special contributions to the USACE legal service mission through the development of a legal theory, a legal management innovation or practice or outstanding performance in solving a legal or management problem.

    Seven employees of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) were recently named recipients of 2021 Women of Color STEM awards. The national-level awards recognize outstanding achievements in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. ERDC awardees include Dr. Leslie Leonard, Dr. Niki Goerger, Dr. Brianna Thompson, Cheryl Wallace-Sims, Joycelynn Brooks, Melanie Sias and Lakeythia Steed, all of the Information Technology Laboratory (ITL).

    MacAllister honored for vital research in Czech Republic

    Dr. Irene MacAllister, a research chemist with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), has been awarded the Czech Republic’s University of Defence Medal honoring her “for the immense contribution she has made to the research effort in protection against high-risk biological agents.” She received the award upon recent completion of her assignment with the U.S. Army Engineer and Scientist Exchange Program (ESEP) to the Czech Republic.

    Though Howard W. McGee Jr. and Dr. Fred T. Tracy had very different careers during their time at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), the two now have something major in common—they’re both 2021 inductees to the prestigious Waterways Experiment Station Gallery of Distinguished Employees. Surrounded by family, friends and coworkers gathered virtually and in-person, McGee and Tracy, both of Vicksburg, were inducted to the gallery at a ceremony on July 15, 2021, at the ERDC Information Technology Laboratory.
