HAMBURG, Germany – Department of Defense (DOD) High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) Director John West with ERDC’s Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) has led a program that recently won the International Data Corporation’s (IDC) 2012 Innovation Excellence Award.

The HPCMP Computational Research and Engineering Acquisition Tools and Environments Program-Air Vehicle (CREATE-AV) team applied HPC physics-based simulation to develop a standard process for generating aerodynamic data on small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) where none previously existed and by generating aerodynamic data that supported air-worthiness certifications for small UAVs.

The new HPC-enabled process for flight clearance decreased UAV certification costs in 2011 by $1.2 million, and reduced the time to certify from 24 to six weeks.

IDC announced the awards at the 2012 International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany.
