BALTIMORE, Md - ERDC Geotechnical and Structure Laboratory's (GSL) James R. "Robert" Britt was recently selected as the recipient of the 2011 Shock and Vibration Information Analysis Center (SAVIAC) Mel Baron Award.

One of six annual awards, this award was established by SAVIAC in 1998 to honor Dr. Melvin L. Baron for his technical contributions and leadership in computational structural dynamics and related specialties in the field of shock and vibration.

Individuals are nominated based on their outstanding technical contributions to the field of shock and vibration in computational structural dynamics and related specialties.

The award recognizes Britt's especially innovative and insightful application of numerical simulation and empirical results to craft the Reflection and Refraction in Multi-Layered Ocean/Ocean Bottoms with Shear Wave Effects (REFMS) code for underwater shock, and the BlastX family of models for airblast in and around buildings.

Britt was nominated by Dr. Alan Ohrt of the Air Force Research Laboratory, who presented the award during the opening session of the symposium at the 82nd Shock and Vibration Symposium in Baltimore, Md., Nov. 1.
