VICKSBURG, Miss. — The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) recently selected ERDC, the University of Virginia, Arizona State University, and Bioengineering Group as the recipients of an Honorable Mention for SAME 2011 Sustainability Award for Education and Outreach.

The award is given for outstanding effort to meet the goals of the Executive Order (E.O.) 13514 and explains the technologies and best management practices necessary to attain the goals.

E.O. 13514 was signed by the President on October 5, 2009, and focuses on federal leadership in environmental, energy, and economic performance, while setting sustainability goals for federal agencies.

The team pioneered the use of multi-criteria decision analysis tools to enable decision makers at Fort Belvoir, Va., Fort Carson, Colo., and elsewhere to address a broad and varying range of emergent conditions, including mission criticality, regulatory and market forces, disruption of service, grid failure, infrastructure deterioration, and others in meeting sustainability goals.

Seed funding from the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management Installation Technology Transfer Program to ERDC's Environmental Laboratory (EL), and stimulus funding managed by ERDC's Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) made this project possible.
