VICKSBURG, Miss. – ERDC Environmental Laboratory’s (EL) Dr. Steve Larson and Gary Nijak, ETS Inc., met with Colleen McKaughn, associate director, Air Division, Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Region 9 recently to provide scientific knowledge and technical guidance concerning the use of Rhizobium tropici biopolymer as a soil amendment for reducing fugitive dust and air particulates.

EPA’s Region 9 serves Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, the Pacific Islands, and 147 tribes and includes the U.S. Army’s Yuma Proving Ground, Ariz.

The EPA has an ongoing interest in identifying dust suppressant products with minimal to no adverse impacts on water quality and aquatic life versus the use of water alone.

The R. tropici biopolymer, developed and patented by ERDC, is an effective, non-toxic, biodegradable dust suppressant.

EL team members will continue to collaborate with the EPA as our partners work toward resolving this environmental concern.
