    Computer scientist Tung “Alex” Ly with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) invented the “Digital Buoy Systems and Method” in his laboratory at ERDC’s Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL), Alexandria, Virginia. He received a patent in May 2022 for his digital system which will help reduce operational costs to the U.S. Government and provide real-time, reliable and enhanced marine navigation safety for U.S. private, public and commercial industries.

    David Hibner was selected to the Senior Executive Service and began serving as the new director of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL) September 26, 2022. Along with his duties as GRL director, Hibner also serves as the director of the Army Geospatial Center (AGC) and the Geospatial Information Officer of the Army.

    RD22 workshop addresses R&D challenges, emphasizes strategic collaboration

    Scientists and engineers from across the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) participated in the organization’s Research and Development 2022 (RD22) workshop and symposium, April 26-28. The event was held at the Vicksburg, Mississippi, main campus and was broadcast virtually over eight time zones with more than 600 attendees.

    Using a “Big Data” approach to find threats, fight terror

    Whether at home or abroad, the main goal of any commander is to keep Soldiers safe. With that in mind, researchers at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) have been using large amounts of historical data, social media activity and news articles to identify the best indicators of when and where a terrorist attack may take place. This “Big Data” approach uses massive amounts of available information, along with high-end parallel computing, to find important clues that aid in the fight against rogue activities.

This inventive software was developed at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Geospatial Research Laboratory as the patented System for Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, later transitioned to the Army Geospatial Center and includes the Geo-centric Environment for Analysis and Reasoning.

    As an intern and later a full-time research engineer at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL), Dr. Michelle Hamilton invented a system for Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, which was patented in September 2020 for emergency responders’ use in prioritizing key geolocations for support allocations and mitigation efforts.

    Dr. Sarah J. Becker, a physical scientist at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Geospatial Research Laboratory (ERDC-GRL), posed in Colombia where she and other ERDC-GRL personnel collected ground-based hyperspectral data on native plants to determine if spectrally separable signatures between the different plants could be determined.

    Dr. Ricky Massaro, a U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development physical scientist, received a patent for his “Method of Processing Full Motion Video Data for Photogrammetric Reconstruction." The patent was primarily designed for special operations forces, intelligence community analysis, terrain specialists and those working with geospatial intelligence as a system for photogrammetric analysis of full motion video (FMV), which converts FMV to image files, extracts metadata and produces accurate 2-D and 3-D geospatial images in real time.

    VICKSBURG, Miss. – When the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Dr. Brandon Lafferty sleeps these days, he dreams about predictive models. That’s because since mid-March, Lafferty, a researcher from the ERDC Environmental Laboratory, has been helping lead ERDC’s Modelling and Simulation Team develop the ERDC Susceptible Exposed Infected Recovered ⸺ or SEIR ⸺ model for COVID-19, and it’s an intense effort.
