    ERDC researchers assess time-of-year restrictions for James River dredging

    Researchers at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Environmental Laboratory (EL) are conducting field studies along the lower James River in Virginia to assess the environmental impacts of dredging and if they continue to justify the existing time-of-year restrictions (TOYR) for dredging in the area.

    Dwindling capacity at Tuttle Creek Reservoir calls for an urgent and innovative solution

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is no stranger to sediment build-up issues. The organization is responsible for maintaining and managing thousands of miles of inland and intracoastal waterways, channels, ports and harbors with a dredging budget of more than $1.7 billion in fiscal year 2023 alone. Presently, USACE researchers are taking on a slightly different challenge and investigating new methods to diminish the accumulation of sediment in lakes and reservoirs caused by dams.

    Michael Mansfield, a river engineer in training (EIT) with the Kansas City District, has been selected for ERDC University. The goal of his six-month program is to research the operational constraints and anticipated effectiveness of water injection dredging on Tuttle Creek Lake.

    Researchers from 10 U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Districts have been selected for the 2023 session of the Engineer Research and Development Center University (ERDC-U). Michael Mansfield, a river engineer in training (EIT) with the Kansas City District was chosen to participate in the detail program.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Buffalo District recently hosted personnel from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Environmental Laboratory and Information Technology Laboratory to field test two dredging evaluation decision and data documentation tools designed to speed decision making for environmental compliance determinations with state and federal agencies. The work was funded by the Dredging Operations Environmental Research (DOER) Program.     ERDC labs lead modernization of dredging evaluation guidance, tools for environmental compliance decisions

    The project delivery team for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Dredging Operations and Environmental Research, or DOER, Project 19-11 recently published technical guidance and tools for modernizing the conduct of dredging evaluations for open water disposal compliance.

    ERDC, Buffalo District release dredged material guidance manual for Great Lakes region

    Researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) Environmental Laboratory and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Great Lakes Districts — Buffalo, Detroit and Chicago — recently released a technical report which provides guidance for evaluating the environmental suitability of dredged material in the Great Lakes region.

    Timothy L. Welp, a research hydraulic engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, was a leader in the dredging industry and provided technical support to field projects conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
