CERL participates in SOUTHCOM Sustainability and Contingency Bases Conference

FORT BLISS, Texas—ERDC Construction Engineering Research Laboratory’s (CERL) Dr. Matthew Swanson gave a presentation on the Virtual Forward Operating Base (VFOB) and Net-Zero Installations (NZI) tools at the second annual Sustainability and Contingency Bases Conference.

The conference was organized by the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) and U.S. Army South. 

Participants included representatives from SOUTHCOM, U.S. Army South, the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Energy & Sustainability, Fort Bliss, Texas National Guard, and the Chilean and Colombian militaries.

The conference was held to share energy, water and waste sustainability strategies and progress with respect to contingency bases. 

Swanson’s presentation generated many questions and interactions related to the capabilities of the VFOB and NZI tools.
