A key objective of the symposium was to work with African regional environmental security specialists on a wide range of environmental security issues relevant to U.S. Army Africa Command (AFRICOM), and for the African national specialists to identify and discuss key issues pertinent to each of their countries.

This engagement is seen as one of the initial steps in defining issues that will be addressed in greater depth as part of bi- and multi-lateral cooperative activities as part of the Theater Security Cooperation program.
