29 May 2013, WASHINGTON - ERDC Information Technology Laboratory’s (ITL) Dr. Charles R. “Bob” Welch gave an invited keynote address at the recent Nanotech 2013 Conference in Washington, D.C.

Welch’s address, “An Engineer’s Approach to Solving Practical Problems with ‘Safer’ Nanomaterials,” included the results from molecular dynamics simulations performed by ITL’s Drs. Charles Cornwell and Bryce Devine; continuum simulations performed by Dr. Jeff Allen; advanced material synthesis discoveries and results from Construction Engineering Research Laboratory’s (CERL) Dr. Charles Marsh, Pete Stynoski, Tom Carlson, Ben Ulmen and Eric Wotring; and ERDC’s research programs in the environmental risk of nanomaterials being led by Dr. Jeff Steevens, Environmental Laboratory.

While at the conference, he also served as a panel member on two groups, the National Nanotechnology Signature Initiative on Knowledge Infrastructure and the Rational Design Principles for Nanotechnology.

Welch is a member of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology subcommittee, which oversees the National Nanotechnology Initiative.

ERDC has become a recognized leader in nanotechnology as applied to civil and military engineering and the environmental risks of nanomaterials.
