Researchers assume leadership roles in Nanotechnology for Defense Conference

Published May 29, 2013

29 May 2013, TUCSON, Ariz. - Researchers from three of the ERDC laboratories were recently appointed to the Department of Defense-initiated Nanotechnology for Defense Conference (NT4D) planned for November.

The NT4D was initiated by DOD agencies in 2003 to provide a forum for sharing nanotechnology developments that address DOD needs.

Nanotechnology affects areas such as the development of ultra-strong materials and improvements in coatings, lubricants, combustion, explosive detonation and photo voltaics.

Two hundred people from DOD, academia and defense industries attend the conference each year.

Last year’s keynote address was given by Dr. Altaf “Tof” Carim, White House staffer and co-chair of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology subcommittee that oversees the National Nanotechnology Initiative.

The next conference is slated for November 4-7, Tucson, Ariz.

ERDC is recognized as a leader in nanotechnology as it applies to civil, military and environmental engineering and is a significant contributor to the NT4D.  As a result, several ERDC researchers were recently appointed to the NT4D’s Technical Program Committee, which oversees session development and paper review.

These researchers are Dr. Paul Allison, Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory, Dr. Charles Marsh, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, and Dr. Bryce Devine, Information Technology Laboratory (ITL).

Additionally, Dr. Charles Cornwell will replace Dr. Bob Welch, both of ITL, on the Strategic Steering Committee (SSC) in June following Welch’s retirement.  The SSC sets overall direction for the NT4D.
