High school students across America will have the opportunity to learn about Army engineer careers and ERDC as a premier workplace when viewing the soon-to- be-released Channel One news clip starring GSL’s Capt. Ben Murray.
Projected to air in April, Murray’s vignette joins other Army career stories featured on Channel One News, which bills itself as “the leading television news network for teens nationwide. Our mission is to inform, educate and inspire by making news relevant and engaging for young people and sparking discussion around the important issues impacting youth today.”
According to Aarona Jordan, Channel One vice-president of sales, the 20-year-old news service is delivered each school day for potential viewing by two million teens composing the Army’s target demographic ages 15-17, as well as three million additional teens in the 12-14 age group.
ERDC’s Public Affairs Office (PAO) facilitated the production by the Army Marketing and Research Group and Channel One for the “Dream Strong” advertising project highlighting opportunities available to young people who join the U.S. Army.
A seven-member production crew set up on the Vicksburg campus and at several local historic sites March 7 to capture a day in the life of Murray an Army structural engineer and West Point graduate. Similar vignettes now airing are approximately four minutes in length.
Recorded by state-of-the-art video and audio, Murray responded to a multitude of questions from Director Daniel Miller, founder of U Direct NYC, a commercial production and post-production company based in New York City. GSL’s blast load simulator, the city’s riverfront park cannons and even his Essayons Fitness training class in front of the WES Fitness Center provided settings for this Soldier’s movements, personal comments and career insights.
“The vignette focused on Capt. Murray’s current job with ERDC and the Corps of Engineers; how the Army has helped him reach his goals; and leadership qualities gained by being part of the Army team,” said PAO Chief Debbie Quimby.
“Channel One also interviewed Dr. Peggy Wright, associate director for Human Capital, and filmed the ERDC-sponsored 456 Siege robotics team for a related piece on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and its importance in the Army,” Quimby said.
The Army is a major partner with Channel One, accessible at www.channelone.com.
