COHUTTA, Ga.--ERDC Environmental Laboratory’s (EL) Fish Ecology Team provided its mobile swim tunnel to the University of Georgia’s (UGA) Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources for a study of white sturgeon.
Sturgeon used for the study were driven from California to Georgia last year, and maintained at the Cohutta Fisheries Center, where testing took place.
The study evaluated behavioral effects, if any, of fin ray sampling used for age and growth studies. The resulting data will be used as part of a thesis by UGA graduate student Phong Nugyen.
EL’s Jay Collins, who last year supervised all aspects of tunnel design and construction, drove the tunnel to Cohutta in November 2012, instructed UGA personnel on its operation, and assisted with initial testing of sturgeon.
Data from this study will be used to justify continued age-determination in population studies of sturgeon in the Sacramento River and San Francisco Bay, now funded by the Sacramento District.
