VICKSBURG, Miss. — ERDC's Dr. Richard Styles, chief, Navigation Branch, Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), and Research Ecologist Dr. David Smith, Environmental Laboratory (EL), hosted a workshop on kinetic energy turbines (KET), Feb. 29–March 1, at CHL. The workshop presented ongoing KET research and development activities at federal labs and evaluated data gaps relevant to USACE mission areas.
More than 40 participants, representing 10 federal laboratories, presented current research and development activities on navigation, regulatory, hydropower and environmental impacts of KETs.
Discussions focused on the need to develop Corps-wide standards to evaluate KET impacts and to determine best practices in implementing potential regulatory and permitting needs that require U.S. Army Corps of Engineers action.
