CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Charles Marsh, Urbana, won two major awards to recognize his work as a researcher at the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory.

CERL’s parent organization, the Engineer Research and Development Center, named him Corps of Engineers Researcher of the Year. The Chief of Engineers will present the award at a ceremony this summer.

Marsh also received the Society of American Military Engineers Technology Advancement Medal. He will accept the medal at the SAME national training conference in May at St. Louis.

Both awards cite his development and technology transfer of nanometer resolution wet sample imagery for transmission electron microscopes and the discovery of a new hierarchical and structural form of carbon. Marsh was granted a patent for the liquid TEM technology and obtained a license agreement with industry to commercialize it.

Marsh is a researcher in CERL’s Materials and Structures Branch.
