FOX, Alaska – ERDC’s Permafrost Research Center at Fox, Alaska, recently hosted a headquarters contingent from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM).

Led by Brig. Gen. Matthew Dzialo, director of logistics and engineering for NORAD and USNORTHCOM, the team was escorted by ERDC Researcher Kevin Bjella through the Permafrost Research Center. The team visited the site for familiarization with the engineering and climate change aspects of permafrost and how such aspects can impact current and future USNORTHCOM area operations.

Discussions involved the latest methods for design and construction and also the need for ongoing permafrost engineering research. The visit provided the opportunity to physically examine the structure and features associated with ice-rich permafrost and helped to explain why such features contribute to more difficult and more costly construction and operations in permafrost terrains.
