Monitor Our Flight: Students Set to Launch Weather Balloon

The community is invited to monitor the flight of the ham radio equipped weather balloon flight to be launched as part of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) summer program for high school students, Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS.

Weather permitting; the launch will take place Tuesday, July 17,  at 10 a.m. from ERDC, Vicksburg, Miss. The current forecast calls for westerly winds, and the chase team expects to recover the balloon in Louisiana after 12 p.m.

The data from the automated packet reporting system (APRS) payload can be monitored online at http://aprs.fi/ by typing in the payload callsign KF5NMD. The system will transmit its location, speed, altitude to an Internet gateway to enable online viewers to track the balloon via the Internet.
