FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The Honorable Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works), received a permafrost briefing and tour of the ERDC Fairbanks Permafrost Tunnel as part of her August orientation trip hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Alaska District.

Darcy's group included COL Reinhard Koenig, Commander and Dr. Larry McCallister, Deputy for Program Management, Alaska District; and LTC Thomas Tickner, Military Assistant to Darcy. The group enjoyed a wide-ranging discussion on how permafrost affects USACE engineering design and its construction mission in Alaska. Also discussed was the role permafrost plays in shaping the Alaska environment, including wetlands, surface hydrology and coastal erosion.
