VICKSBURG, Miss. — ERDC Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL) Senior Scientist Dr. Paul F. Mlakar was recently appointed to serve as a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Society Awards Committee.

Mlakar will serve the society until Sep 2013, along with Presidents Emeriti and other distinguished members.

The society's awards committee administers the awards programs, selects the recipients for the most prestigious awards, and liaises with other organizations regarding awards for interest to ASCE.

In June 2010, Mlakar was selected by ASCE as a Distinguished Member. This is an honor that is bestowed on only 192 of the society's 144,000 worldwide members. He was recognized with this honor for his demonstrated leadership in forensic civil engineering, including significant contributions to structural assessments following catastrophic events; effective communication of technical issues to the public; and great dedication to ASCE.
