ARLINGTON, Va. — ERDC Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL) Director Dr. David Pittman was recently presented with the 2010 Meritorious Presidential Rank Award. The prestigious award, which represents recognition from President Barack Obama, is the second-highest honor bestowed upon career Senior Executive Service (SES) members. Recipients are described as strong leaders, professionals and scientists who achieve results and consistently demonstrate strength, integrity and a commitment to excellence.

"This has been a humbling experience," said Pittman. "As the news of the award sank in, my pride in being part of the GSL, ERDC and USACE was reinforced. The recognition is a reflection of the great work we've accomplished together for the nation and the Warfighter.

"The technology we're developing is literally saving lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, it's protecting our nation's borders, it's making the world safer and better," Pittman continued. "The quality of our research, and of the people responsible for it, has been recognized before, and this award is one more validation of that quality."

"This kind of recognition belongs to GSL and ERDC as much as any one individual," said Pittman. "It is a reflection of the work of a great team. The true honor for me is getting to work with an amazing team that is dedicated to making a difference every day—the award is just icing on the cake."

Pittman was presented with the award in a June 29 ceremony hosted by the Secretary of the Army at the Pentagon.
