Center Strafford, N.H. ERDC's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) and Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) and the New Hampshire Army National Guard (NH ARNG) are conducting a wind study for the possible development of a net-zero (energy) training facility in Center Strafford, N.H.

The first phase of the work, which started in the fourth quarter of FY11, involved the installation of a 34-meter meteorological tower onsite to monitor wind speed and direction at several heights above ground level for turbulence and icing.

The project will involve NH ARNG personnel for tower installation and monitoring. Results of the year-long wind resource analysis will facilitate analysis and selection of various models of wind turbines to meet the site's energy needs and to minimize construction, operation and maintenance costs.

The first-phase of the program is scheduled for completion in September 2012, with possible installation of one or more wind turbines to follow.
