VICKSBURG, Miss. — A two-day meeting was recently held at ERDC-Vicksburg with internationally-recognized materials researchers from the United Kingdom (U.K.) and the U.S.

The meeting continued U.S.-U.K. research collaborations on advanced ceramic composites and advanced carbon nanotube fibers.

The collaborations are a result of efforts by the U.S. Army International Research Office, directed by Dr. Russell Harmon and assisted by Julian Richmond, to leverage outstanding international researchers to further strengthen ERDC's research programs.

The collaborations are part of ERDC's Advanced Materials Initiative (AMI) to develop structural materials that have several fold improvement in strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios over existing materials.

The AMI employs molecular dynamics and larger-scale computer simulations to guide the design and synthesis of materials, along with advanced synthesis methods and validating experiments.

U.K. researchers in attendance were from Oxford University, Imperial College, and Queen Mary University. A professor from the University of Illinois attended and was part of the U.S. team.

Current materials research presentations were made by all attending professors and by ERDC technical staff members Dr. Charles Marsh, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory; Drs. Charles Cornwell, Jeff Allen, Bryce Devine and Bob Welch, Information Technology Laboratory; Drs. John Peters and Paul Allison, Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory; and Dr. Jeff Steevens, Environmental Laboratory.
