ERDC won a R&D magazine R&D 100 Award for development of a new corrosion-resistant vitreous coating for binding concrete to steel.
Ceramic Industry Magazine featured the technology in their May 2010 issue and the Porcelain Enamel Institute reported that, “This is the most exciting new technology and potential product for the porcelain enamel industry in the last 20 years.”
ERDC developed a reactive porcelain/enamel to coat concrete reinforcing steel that provides corrosion protection and a steel-to-concrete bond that is three-to-five times stronger than current technologies. The coating cannot delaminate like other technologies. The first full-scale installation of the technology was at the Corpus Christi Army Depot.
ERDC has commercialized and distributed the technology throughout the world, where its application is helping to reduce the cost of maintenance in building materials.
