VICKSBURG, Miss. — The newest edition of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Engineering With Nature (EWN) Atlas series, Volume 3, will be released May 22, 2024. Building on the success of its predecessors, Volume 3 continues to spotlight the remarkable projects and initiatives harnessing the power of nature-based solutions (NBS) around the world.

Since its inception, the EWN Atlas series has served as a testament to the transformative impact of collaboration and innovation in environmental engineering. Volume 1, released in 2018, featured 56 projects, while Volume 2, launched in 2021, showcased an additional 62 projects. Volume 3 expands on this legacy by presenting 58 new projects, demonstrating the continuous growth of EWN practices.

The projects featured in this new issue cover diverse environmental contexts, including beaches, wetlands, islands, reefs, riverine systems and floodplains. Additionally, the Atlas highlights specific project types, such as the integration of vegetation and natural materials, as well as environmental enhancements of existing infrastructure.

Jeff King, national lead for the EWN program, commends the caliber of projects featured in Volume 3.

“Atlas 3 really reflects the best of the best work being done by colleagues across the Corps of Engineers and around the world. It really was a hard task to just choose 58 projects — we received so many more nominations,” said King.

This latest edition marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to advance EWN practices worldwide. King personally invites all readers to journey through the Atlas and discover the extraordinary projects featured within its pages.
