Electronic buoy invention directs river traffic more safely, economically
On the nation’s waterways, US Coast Guard (USCG) and the US Corps of Engineers’ boats are used to maintain more than 12,000 buoys by constantly operating fleets of buoys-tendering vessels to ensure marine navigation safety for the public, private and commercial transportation. Potential savings’ estimates based on nationwide electronic buoy deployment total more than 300 million per year in buoy-tendering operation costs when combining the USCG and USACE fleets. Labeled as a “game changer” by USCG experts at the Louisville District, this digital buoy system would also enhanced marine navigation safety.
