Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 40 attend a U.S. Air Force school for airfield damage repair at the Red Horse Engineering facility on Kadena Air Base. Air Force engineers specialize in airfield repairs, water and fuel units and engineering surveying. Dr. George Stubblefield, research mechanical engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory received funds from the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholar Seed Grant (SEED) Program to support his work into determining minimum base layer thicknesses on Department of Defense airfields.
