LD 19 underwater Acoustic Deterrent System
The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center-Environmental Laboratory (ERDC-EL) is partnering with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other state and federal agencies to deploy the nation’s first large-scale acoustic barrier at Lock and Dam 19, part of a deterrent study for invasive Asian carp. The underwater speakers will emit sounds that the carp perceive as predatory signals, deterring the fish from the area. The ERDC-EL-USGS team is currently ahead of schedule with the installation of the underwater Acoustic Deterrent System. The weldment has been delivered and team members have been adding speakers to it. The vertical and horizontal core-drilling is complete, and divers are finishing clearing the horizontal hole. Next, the weldment will be installed in the lock by crane.
