Researchers assist with oil herder/igniter testing for spill response
The extendable boom with its attached hopper is positioned above the basin of CRREL’s Geophysical Research Facility in preparation for testing. Once testing begins, the hopper will move or convey the tube, which contains the herder, igniter, arming and timing circuit, flare and a nine-volt battery, dropping into the water where it will fully deploy herding the oil and igniting the burn with an 80-90 percent burn efficiency.
