Confederate Brig. Gen. Stephen D. Lee: Brig. Gen. Stephen D. Lee had tactical command of Confederate forces at Chickasaw Bayou. In the aftermath of civil war, Lee served as a state senator in Mississippi, was first president of what is now Mississippi State University, and became the first chairman of the Vicksburg National Military Park Commission.
