ERDC employees and stakeholders came together to celebrate the world's largest heavy vehicle simulator, The HVS Titan. This unique equipment can test roadways, airstrips, and even railways 23 hours a day to simulate traffic over a large period of time.

In today’s ever-changing world, technology is advancing at lightning speed. For the U.S. Army that means constantly evolving vehicles, weapons and systems. With that in mind, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) has partnered with the U.S. Army Program Executive Office Combat Support & Combat Service Support’s Project Manager Bridging to test high military load capacity vehicle weight limits of the Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB).

As missions evolve for the U.S. military, so have the requirements for Airfield Damage Repair or ADR. The Department of Defense’s existing ADR capability requires significant manpower, equipment, and pre-positioned material at key bases. But under its new adaptive basing concept of operations, ADR will need to be lighter and more agile. Researchers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory collaborated with the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) and the Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center (NAVFAC EXWC) to develop an Expedient and Expeditionary Airfield Damage Repair (E-ADR) solution to deliver just enough, just in time solutions for the Warfighter. Their efforts culminated in a multi-year joint capability technology demonstration, or JCTD, and military utility assessment at McEntire Air National Guard Base, South Carolina.

Over the last several decades of ERDC’s mobility research, we have played a critical part in the entire acquisition process using mobility modeling and simulation tools. These tools have helped the Army define requirements and test vehicle designs against those requirements in many different operational environments. For acquisition stakeholders, this could lead to accelerated decision making and cost savings in the absence of physical testing.

Dr. Ben Cox and fellow team members from the Airfields and Pavements Branch of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center's Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory utilize a new technique for creating hot mix asphalt. The researchers demonstrate how induction heating technology, similar to that of a microwave, can be leveraged to repair airfields and pavements throughout the world. This technology is one of many innovations that will be discussed during the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Innovation Summit scheduled in October 2021.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Research and Development Center's Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory uses a Heavy Vehicle-load Simulator-Aircraft system to test AM2 matting for the U.S. Navy's P-8 Poseidon aircraft in March 2021 at the Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Dr. Tim Rushing, research civil engineer, explains the various components of a successful test and how the laboratory's research contributes to the Department of Defense's mission.

Icing threatens the safety and success of military and civilian operations around the globe, as the rapid accumulation of ice can hinder mobility, damage infrastructure and impede communications. Existing treatments are either both costly and labor intensive or limited in their scope because little is known about the underlying scientific principles that make passive coatings effective. That’s why a team of ERDC researchers is conducting innovative basic research to unravel the physical processes that govern ice adhesion. Their research will create a fundamental understanding of the microscale mechanisms that control how ice attaches to various surfaces, paving the way for future development of new protective and advanced materials and the expansion of existing treatments to broader applications and other fields. This project is another example of how ERDC’s basic research is solving the impossible problems of our future battlespace.

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is proud to have a long history of discovering, developing and delivering new ways to protect our environment. Today, ERDC continues to produce world-class research to support the Corps of Engineers’ Environmental Operating Principles. That includes methods to remove blue-green algae from large bodies of water and break down its toxins into useful products like biofuels and fertilizer. ERDC is leading a collaborative effort to address the legacy issues of PFAS, and is providing more environmentally friendly and sustainable technologies for Army installations. It is helping the Corps beneficially use dredged sediment to nourish wetlands, and is helping local governments prepare for the flood threat that follows destructive wildfires. ERDC’s commitment to improving and sustaining the environment remains steadfast.
