CRREL Facilities

The Research Area in CRREL's Ice Engineering Facility is an 80-foot by 160-foot refrigerated room with a variety of equipment, a water reservoir and water flow capabilities, and environmental controls to conduct large, realistic physical model studies of lakes, rivers and other terrain.
CRREL's Permafrost Tunnel Research Facility provides researchers, scientists, and students with a unique source of data in a natural laboratory. The Permafrost Tunnel stands apart from other cold regions research sites by allowing users to make observations both from above and within the permafrost.
CRREL's laboratory in Hanover, N.H. and its Alaska Resarch Office in Fairbanks offer state-of-the-art facilities for the international community. In addition to the list below, CRREL capabilities also include a Cold Room Complex (24 rooms); -35°C capability, low-temp materials laboratories; and special-purpose ice test facilities.
