New species discovered in Alaskan permafrost

Researchers at ERDC’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Lab have just discovered 26 new species of microorganisms preserved in ancient Alaskan permafrost! After being carefully revived in CRREL’s soil microbiology lab, these microbes are revealing how life not only survives but thrives in extreme cold.

Self-contained electric power system unit, the “energy node"

ERDC’s Construction Engineering Research Lab took another major step toward resilient, off-grid power! The Senior Energy Project team recently installed a second compact electric grid unit – advancing innovative, deployable energy solutions. Built by our industry partner Sesame Solar, this new unit expands on the first small power unit originally deployed at U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range in December 2024. Together, they are showcasing fully off-grid, reliable energy.
