Lester Holt, anchor of "NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt," toured the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center's Permafrost Tunnel Research Facility in Fox, Alaska, Sept. 14, 2019. The veteran journalist talked to ERDC's Dr. Tom Douglas about key tunnel features and the science of climate change. Douglas is an Alaska-based research chemist assigned to our Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, based in Hanover, New Hampshire. Runners take their mark at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Mad Scientist 5K Race/Walk held in Vicksburg, Mississippi, September 7, 2019. The race was designed to enhance community relations and raise funds for science, technology, engineering and math scholarships.
Henry Diaz-Alvarez, a research civil engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory, was selected to receive the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Award Conference’s (HENAAC) Outstanding Technical Achievement Award. Dr. Edith Martinez-Guerra, a research environmental engineer with the ERDC’s Environmental Laboratory, will receive the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Military Hero award from the Department of Defense. Both awards will be presented at the 2019 Great Minds in STEM HENAAC, September 25-28, in Orlando, Fla.
