TITLE: Mount Washington Observatory: An inside look at the history and scientific research at the Home of the World's Worst Weather

PRESENTER: Sharon Schilling , Executive Director, Mount Washington Observatory

ABSTRACT: The storied Mount Washington Observatory is world-renowned for its extreme wind and icing conditions. From its establishment in 1932, scientific research and instrumentation testing has been a constant. Organizations such as NASA, CRREL, the National Weather Service, and the FAA have collaborated with MWO to study icing conditions. Out of necessity, MWO has partnered with others to develop anemometers and other atmospheric instrumentation that work in such unforgiving conditions. In this presentation, we will discuss the history of weather observations and scientific research at MWO, current areas of research, and our facilities and capacity for atmospheric research and instrumentation testing in an effort to seek new collaborative opportunities with scientists at another great New Hampshire institution.
