WEBVTT 00:01.929 --> 00:03.985 This summer , the Cold Regs Research 00:03.985 --> 00:05.985 and Engineering Laboratory provided 00:05.985 --> 00:08.040 research internships to more than 45 00:08.040 --> 00:10.207 high school undergraduate and graduate 00:10.207 --> 00:12.207 student STEM scholars . Designed to 00:12.207 --> 00:14.207 prepare the next generation of STEM 00:14.207 --> 00:16.262 professionals for careers in science 00:16.262 --> 00:18.373 and technology , the internships give 00:18.373 --> 00:18.260 scholars the opportunity to join a 00:18.260 --> 00:20.427 research team working on real projects 00:20.427 --> 00:22.649 with real world implications while also 00:22.649 --> 00:24.593 exploring their own individualized 00:24.593 --> 00:26.649 research interests . The internships 00:26.649 --> 00:28.649 culminated in a student science and 00:28.649 --> 00:30.816 technology symposium where the student 00:30.816 --> 00:32.704 scholars presented their research 00:32.704 --> 00:32.279 findings to the lab's research 00:32.279 --> 00:35.569 scientist staff . This is giving me a 00:35.569 --> 00:37.680 huge amount of experience for what it 00:37.680 --> 00:39.791 means to do science research , so I'm 00:39.791 --> 00:41.791 hoping to eventually get to a point 00:41.791 --> 00:43.902 where I can do science research of my 00:43.902 --> 00:46.013 own and write about it and present on 00:46.013 --> 00:48.569 it . So all of this has given me the 00:48.569 --> 00:50.513 experience to be able to feel more 00:50.513 --> 00:52.625 confident to do that . I think it was 00:52.625 --> 00:54.402 very fascinating to see all the 00:54.402 --> 00:54.169 different motivations behind the 00:54.169 --> 00:56.280 project . We had some motivations for 00:56.280 --> 00:58.485 plane applications and . We had some 00:58.485 --> 01:00.707 motivations from Olympic luge teams and 01:00.707 --> 01:02.652 actually measuring the friction of 01:02.652 --> 01:04.818 their surfaces . So I think having all 01:04.818 --> 01:06.985 of those as background and motivations 01:06.985 --> 01:06.525 for the project itself was pretty 01:06.525 --> 01:08.747 unique here . Our summer intern program 01:08.747 --> 01:10.858 is great for students because we give 01:10.858 --> 01:12.914 them hands-on opportunities to solve 01:12.914 --> 01:15.025 problems that matter to our country . 01:15.444 --> 01:18.885 For us it's just an awesome opportunity 01:18.885 --> 01:22.269 to get . Injection of fresh ideas 01:22.269 --> 01:24.470 from students who are bringing the 01:24.470 --> 01:28.069 latest from academia into our problem 01:28.069 --> 01:30.069 space , and it's a great recruiting 01:30.069 --> 01:32.291 pipeline . I think I learned a lot like 01:32.291 --> 01:34.402 just having a mentor to talk to , not 01:34.402 --> 01:36.569 only about my research , but just like 01:36.569 --> 01:38.680 my career path in general I think was 01:38.680 --> 01:38.739 really nice .
