TITLE: Energy Research Plans for the Engineering Resources Branch - Energy Systems in Cold Region Climates

PRESENTER: Caitlin Callaghan, Research General Engineer - Cold Regions Research & Engineering Laboratory

ABSTRACT: Using the electricity system (i.e., generation, transmission, distribution) as a starting framework, cold region challenges exist with respect to energy supply – whether from coal stockpiles, solar PV, or wind, for example.  Additionally, performance of sensors, transformers, and electricity cables can inhibit transmission in cold temperatures if the materials are not designed to reasonably perform under cold region-conditions.  Finally, distribution components can be similarly challenged by cold temperatures if the materials are not suitable for cold region-conditions or if the connected end-users have inhibited connection points preventing their receipt of produced electricity.

CRREL is well-suited to coordinate and collaborate with external partners, including academic research programs, to address these challenges.  This presentation will provide highlight of CRREL’s Engineering Resources Branch planned (and underway) energy research efforts looking at energy systems in cold regions.
