Anthony J. Gow, Ph.D.
LITTLE AMERICA, Antarctica (1958) – U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory geologist Anthony J. Gow, Ph.D., shown during ice core retrieval on the Ross Ice Shelf. Gow’s team was the first to penetrate the bottom of the glacier (approximately 300 meters). Dr. Gow performed research in Antarctica nearly every summer season from 1959-1969. He’s authored or contributed to 120+ reports/publications. CRREL’s conference center bears his name and Antarctica’s Mount Gow (1770 meters; 712000S, 1624000E) located on the east side of Rennick Glacier in the Bowers Mountains was named for his contributions in 1964.
